Thank you for your questions.

The Law Society's recommendation is that a solicitor should meet their client at some point during the transaction. Many online solicitors do not follow this procedure. I personally would question whether a solicitor who does not follow the guidance of the Law Society is doing their job properly.

Certain mortgage lenders also require the solicitor acting to witness the mortgage deed if you are obtaining a mortgage.

There is also the question of local knowledge. Often I find, as I live and work locally, that I have knowledge which a solicitor 200 miles away would not have.

I appreciate that cost is an important factor in a transaction but do remember to ensure that the quote that you have received is all encompassing and that there are no hidden extras at the finish. Also bear i mind that the cost of a 400 mile round trip may outweigh any savings that you make!
