You are permitted to switch into the Tier 1 General category from the student or Tier 4 category from inside the United Kingdom. Since you are switching into this category from the student/Tier 4 category you will need to score 80 points and your application will not fall into the category of an extension application but an “initial” application.

You will need to provide your original certificate of award or qualification (amongst other documents) and you will also be required to provide additional evidence if you have been a sponsored student i.e. a student who is wholly supported by an award that covers both fees and living costs within the past 12 months. If this is the case; then your Government or international scholarship agency will need to provide express unconditional consent in writing which provides the UKBA with permission to grant you leave to remain in the UK.

You will also be expected to have complied with the conditions of your stay as a student and to have entered the UK with the genuine motivation to study; as all Points Based applications are subject to the general grounds for refusal under Rule 320.
